Brian's grandchildrenThe Brian Mason Memorial Tournament was an overwhelming success, with 32 fellow APA league players and Brian’s family and friends coming together to remember Brian. In one of the largest league tournaments ever held at Diamond Eight, 16 teams played scotch doubles 9-Ball, with the all-female final match going to the hill. Audre Hartman and Bernadette Westbrook edged out Christine Skawinski and Jen Oliver to win 1st place. Dan Murray won the beautiful Cuetec cue donated by the APA of Albany while his brother Dave took home a Diamond Eight gift pack. Over $500 was raised for the American Diabetes Association. A plaque was installed at Diamond Eight to remember Brian. Frank Rogers shared some memories of Brian with the emotional crowd of players, family and friends, who all shared in a delicious hot and cold buffet. Thanks again to everyone who participated to help make this event so successful!

Chris Orme

The 2010 Diamond Eight edition of the Joss Tour Stop was not the same old story, as favorite Dennis Hatch was eliminated early, leaving the door open for the rest of the field. Canada natives Chris Orme and Dan Hewitt took advantage of the situation to reach the finals. Chris played brilliantly, defeating Bob Cunningham, Dwight Dixon, Dan Hewitt, Dave Fernandez and Redgie Cutler on his way to fill the hot seat. Chris made quick work of Redgie Cutler, 9-1, to send him to the 1-loss side to face Dan Hewitt, who had rolled through tough matches against Mike Zuglan, Paul Rozonowski and Bucky Souvanthong, Dan and Redgie traded games until 6-6, when Dan was able to pull away with the victory and get to the finals. Chris took an early 5-1 lead in the final match, but Dan started a comeback to get to 5. Chris was able to stay focused and stay undefeated to win the $1400. first place prize, 9-5. Payouts appear after the jump.

Congrats to Kevin Soranno, who won the $1100 Custom Joss Cue! Thanks to Mike Zuglan, all the spectators, and the field of 39 players for their support of Diamond Eight!

Diamond Eight’s annual Toys for Tots 8-Ball Tournament was another huge success, thanks to all of our friends (old and new) who came to support the mission of Toys for Tots and ensure that the children of the Capital Region shared in the holiday spirit.

Ann and Chris enjoy their victory!

Mike

It was Chris and Ann Smith, and Jay D’Haene and Mike Yudin, who shared the 1st place victory for the 2009 edition, as they decided to forgo the final match and split the prize money. Both teams played extremely well throughout the day and deserve kudos for their great sportsmanship. The 8-Ball scotch doubles tournament saw 24 players matched up in pairs to compete in this fun event and enjoy the delicious buffet provided by Diamond Eight (great job Angela!). Thanks to everyone who came out to support Toys for Tots!

Jared Zimmerman

The Dominiak Cues Northeast Amateur 10-Ball Tour kicked off its 2009/2010 Season at Diamond Eight with a strong field of 25 amateur players. Jared Zimmerman, of Mayfield, NY and frequent visitor at Diamond Eight, worked his way through the field to meet Tom Acciavatti in the race-to-5 final match. Jared jumped out to a 4-1 lead, only to see Tom fight his way back to the hill. After some back and forth in the deciding game, Jared was able to run 4 balls and take the easy 9-10 combo for the victory.

Jared and Tom made it to the finals

For the new season of the tour, Kevin has decided to raffle off a Dominiak Cue for the players at every stop. Diamond Eight’s own Jackie Ford was the lucky player and took home a beautiful Dominiak Cue. Frank Rich, Frank Majewski, and Chuck Hill won Diamond Eight and Dominiak t-shirts.

Congratulations to all the players for a great tournament! Thanks to Kevin Vidal for running the tour, specifically designed for the amateur players. It was a great day. Final results:

  • 1st: Jared Zimmerman
  • 2nd: Tom Acciavatti
  • 3rd: Frank Rich
  • 4th: Frank Majewski

US Amateur logo

Congratulations to Tom Acciavatti for advancing to the U.S. Amateur Championship, to be held November 6-8 at Stroker’s in Tampa, Florida! Tom was among the four Diamond Eight league players competing against the very best pool players in the region, in the preliminary tournament held in Connecticut over the weekend of September 19-20, 2009. Congratulations to Frank Rich, Joe Sinicropi, and Chris Smith, who impressed the field with their skills. Frank and Joe got to the semi-final round, while Chris advanced to the final table in his bracket. Winners of each bracket gained entry into the prestigious U.S. Amateur Championship.

All four players advanced to the semi-final round, proving once again the strong competitive nature and skills of Diamond Eight players.

Joe Sinicropi and Tom Acciavatti unfortunately met in the same bracket, and Joe could not get past the surging Tom. Frank Rich also fell before the final match, but both players deserve recognition for extremely strong showings.

Chris Smith and Tom Acciavatti both advanced to the final match in their respective brackets. Chris got off to a slow start, and could not gain the ground necessary to finish his fight for first place. Congratulations to Chris, for a noteworthy journey to the finals. Tom again showed his mettle by staying focused and securing the victory and entry onto a much larger stage.
